The greatest part of this app is that you are developing your skills and simultaneously translating the web. Similarly, it allows going through lessons if you are offline. Generally users love Duolingo, although some of them criticize the reduced speaking practices and claim that some sentences lack context.

Getting started

Once you are done with the download and installation process, there are two paths to follow in Duolingo: start studying a language from the beginning, or taking the placement test to skip some lessons if you have studied that language before. This way, you will be free to bypass the stuff you already learned.

Duolingo structures lessons as games. In each lesson you get four “lives”: every time your answer is wrong, you lose a life. If finally you run out of lives, then you have to start the lesson again. In Duolingo there are several ways to get ahead in lessons: racking up points for completing translation tasks and lessons, getting credits for particular accomplishments or increasing your tally of vocabulary words you’ve learned, amongst others. This app allows you to have friends, so you can see their scores on a leaderboard.

If you got a question wrong and do not understand why, simply click on the “Discuss Sentence” link to open a discussion forum. Usually, there is somebody that asked your same question before, so the answer will be waiting for you. If that is not your case, go ahead posting your doubt; surely there will be somebody responding soon.

Repetition is a great way to embrace new and unfamiliar content. In Duolingo, reviewing old lessons do not only mean racking up points again, but also keeping your vocabulary marked as “strong” (if you do not come back to these words often, they lose “strength”). If you are looking for something more challenging, Duolingo also includes Timed Practices you can unlock by earning 25 lingots. They consist of 30 initial seconds to answer 20 questions.

Duolingo 3.2 is innovative language learning app that uses gamification to enhance language learning. Created by Luis von Ahn, Duolingo 3.2 offers several languages including French, German, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Russian, as well as regional dialects of languages including Spanish and Portuguese. The app supports various input and output formats to cover important areas of language learning such as listening, speaking and writing. Further, each language has various tiers and levels, and users can collect lingots by completing exercises without losing any hearts. Lingots represent accomplishments. The lingots collected can be used to buy heart refills, clothes for the Duolingo owl mascot, Duo, as well as other bonus skills. Users can also view discussions for questions to further clarify confusions.

Besides being useful, Duolingo is also a smart app. Duolingo creates a list of words as users level up so that they can revisit and revise the words at a later time as they forget. Additionally, Duolingo allows personalized quizzes to strengthen one’s language skills as they move along. If a user is on a streak, then Duo (the owl mascot) regularly reminds users to keep practicing their language. The community on the Duolingo website is also very supportive and helping and users can initiate discussions if they want to ask questions.

Pros

  • Gamification methodology of language learning is very effective
  • Active community for discussions and seeking out help
  • Regular reminders to keep away from losing track
  • Customized quizzes for revising words and strengthening skills

Cons

  • Not as in-depth as a language textbook
  • Occasional mispronunciations in the quizes
  • Rare errors in sentence translations

Duolingo is a website for the free language learning while a crowdsourcing platform text translation. The service is designed so that as the user advances in learning helps to translate web pages and documents. Currently the site only offers courses in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese Though now available "The incubator languages."

The learning method is very simple, we are seeing words in English (or the language you are learning) and our language . Also applying to pronounce each word as spoken know. As the years have options for selecting the words translate us to write or even without any help. All with the help of images that help us to associate each word with its meaning and thus have greater retention.

With different levels begin with the basics including different lessons. As we move forward we gain points. If we see that the level is too simple, we can move forward and unlock new.

To do this, the icon shaped lock and tap will start a test. If we overcome the test will pass to the next level without having to go through the basic lessons. And so on. So that according to our level we can move to a more or less advanced. So that according to our level we can move to a more or less advanced.
